February Admissions News

By Brandie Erickson February 8, 2023 BS/MD Admissions Consulting Newsletter

The beginning of February draws the Direct Medical, Early Decision, Early Action and Regular Decision application flurry to a close. This is an exciting time for seniors, as they finally feel “done” with the application process and begin to hear back from multiple early applications. Especially here at Moon Prep, seniors are busy scheduling interview prep sessions with our interview experts, preparing for direct medical interviews at Case Western, Nova Southeastern, Penn State, Baylor University, St. Bonaventure and Albany Medical College pathway schools, among others.

Mark your calendar, here are the college decision release dates.

Just a reminder: If you are a senior who has received disappointing acceptance news, the Moon Prep counselors are available to meet for an application review to identify any opportunities for adjustment and remaining colleges with deadlines. You can still apply to these schools that are on many of our college lists: UNC Charlotte, Penn State, UPitt, Michigan State, Indiana University Bloomington, Hofstra University, and Arizona State.

Check out this list of schools with late admission deadlines.

Schedule a complimentary meeting to learn how we can help your senior make last-minute changes in these crucial final months of the admissions cycle – another month, and it will be too late!

College Updates For The 2023-24 Admissions Cycle:

University of Pennsylvania has extended their test-optional policy through 2023-24.

University of Miami will remain test optional for first-year students applying for Fall 2024.

Many prestigious summer experiences have deadlines that have already passed us by! Thankfully, the Moon Prep counselors have you covered with a list of summer programs with remaining deadlines ready to send you as soon as you sign up to work with one of our mentors.

Add a Moon Prep mentor to your side now, while there is still time to make adjustments – even meeting for a couple sessions early in the process and saving the rest of your hours for college essays could mean the difference between multiple college acceptances in the long run!

2023 Admissions Trends

With our younger Moon Prep families, we are often asked for updates about how things are trending for our seniors and if we can make any predictions for their child’s graduation year. Unfortunately, the world of college admissions is in constant flux. However, after studying trends and data, Higher Ed Dive has made a few predictions to watch for the coming year, regarding financial aid changes and student loan forgiveness. One of the most interesting updates has been the issues surrounding college rankings this year. Multiple top colleges refused to participate in the U.S. News college rankings, leaving students wondering where to turn for reliable advice on college information to build a balanced college list. Thankfully, the Moon Prep students have their mentors and resources available to them, like our College List Builder, but it will be interesting to watch what the future holds for college rankings.

Interview Invitations

Interview invitation season is not over! Many of our students are still receiving interview invites and waiting to hear from remaining schools for interviews. The good news is that Moon Prep is prepared to help you with every interview step, with our expert medical mentors available to help guide students through interview prep of any format. We offer free resources, like our BS/MD Interview Guide, and have files on past interviews at most direct medical programs to share details with our students.

Contact us today for a complimentary consultation for interview prep. Our team is dedicated to your success. Your success is our success, after all.

Student Mental Health = Retention Rates

When considering colleges to add to the college list for juniors, parents and school counselors consider many factors: acceptance rate, student-to-teacher ratio, and campus size. Retention and graduation rates are also data points that are tracked across schools and is a consideration for many parents to determine if students are being supported and feel happy at that school.

Higher Ed Dive recently took a deeper look into how mental health on campus may affect that retention rate across multiple studies. What they found, which may seem obvious at first, is that students with a history of mental health distress have higher college dropout rates across the board, which also reflects retention rates. Colleges are beginning to place a greater emphasis on mental health support on campuses, especially after data like this has been uncovered.

February scholarship advice: Did you know that negotiating your financial aid package typically only works for private colleges because their aid funds are more flexible. If you’ve committed to a public state university, it might be time to check out external scholarships. Thankfully, there are many scholarships with deadlines in the spring, so build your list now!
