Rising Seniors:  How Much Does Your Intended Major Matter in College Admissions?

 
You’ve built your college list, polished your activities section, and started tackling supplemental essays. Then you reach a deceptively simple question:

Intended major?
For some students, the answer is obvious. For others, it launches an entirely new admissions strategy debate. Is biology too common for a premed? Would applying as anthropology make you stand out? Is computer science harder to get into than history? And if you select “undecided,” will colleges think you lack direction?

The frustrating answer is: your intended major can matter—but how much it matters depends heavily on the college.

First, Know What You’re Actually Applying To
At some universities, students apply to the institution as a whole and don’t formally declare a major until later. Your intended major may provide context for your interests, but you aren’t necessarily competing exclusively against applicants interested in the same subject.

At other universities, applicants are admitted directly into a particular college, school, or program. Engineering, business, nursing, architecture, and computer science are common examples where admissions processes or capacity constraints may differ.

That distinction matters.

Selecting mechanical engineering at a university that admits directly to engineering can have very different implications than selecting biology at a liberal arts college where everyone enters academically undeclared.

Before trying to strategize around your major, research a more important question:

Am I applying to the university, a particular undergraduate school, or directly to my major?

Are Some Majors More Competitive?

They can be.

High-demand programs may have limited faculty, laboratory space, clinical placements, or course capacity. Computer science, engineering, business, nursing, and certain specialized programs can therefore be particularly competitive at some institutions.

But don’t automatically assume that choosing a less popular major gives you an admissions advantage.

Imagine an applicant whose entire profile revolves around robotics: four years of engineering courses, leadership on the robotics team, an engineering internship, and essays about designing assistive technology. If that student suddenly applies as a classics major because they believe classics is “easier to get into,” the application may raise more questions than it answers.

Admissions officers evaluate applications as a whole. Your coursework, extracurricular activities, essays, recommendations, and academic interests tell a story. Your intended major is one piece of that story.

The goal isn’t to pick the least competitive major.

It’s to choose an academic direction that makes sense for you.

But I’m Premed. Should I Apply as Biology?
Only if you actually want to study biology.

One of the most persistent misconceptions among future physicians is that they need to major in biology, neuroscience, chemistry, or another traditional STEM field.

You don’t.

Medical schools generally require prerequisite coursework, rather than a particular undergraduate major. A future physician could study biology, economics, English, engineering, philosophy, anthropology, music, or countless other subjects while completing the courses needed for medical school.

So don’t choose neuroscience simply because it sounds appropriately “premed.”

Ask yourself: If medical school disappeared tomorrow, would I still be excited to spend four years studying this subject?

If the answer is no, consider exploring other options.

Can an Unusual Major Help Me Stand Out?
Possibly—but not simply because it’s unusual.

A student interested in medicine and anthropology might have compelling questions about culture and healthcare. Someone interested in computer science and medicine might want to explore the use of artificial intelligence in diagnostics. A philosophy major might be fascinated by bioethics.

Those combinations become interesting when they’re genuine intellectual interests, not admissions tactics.

Applying as a philosophy major when you’ve never taken philosophy, joined a related activity, read about the subject independently, or otherwise demonstrated interest isn’t automatically going to make you memorable.

Remember: colleges aren’t simply assembling a spreadsheet of majors. They’re building an academic community.

Your interests become compelling when admissions officers can understand why you’re interested in them and what you might do with them.

 

What About Applying Undecided?
Being undecided is not the same thing as being directionless.

Seventeen-year-olds aren’t expected to have their entire careers mapped out.

In fact, genuine intellectual exploration can make for an excellent application. Perhaps you’re fascinated by neuroscience and psychology but aren’t sure which perspective you prefer. Maybe your interests span public policy, economics, and healthcare. Or perhaps you simply haven’t had enough exposure to different disciplines to make an informed decision yet.

That’s okay.

The key is showing curiosity rather than indecision.

“I have no idea what I want to study” communicates something very different from “I’m fascinated by several questions and want the freedom to explore them before choosing a discipline.”

Don’t Try to Game the Major

Every application season, students wonder whether they should select a supposedly “easier” major and transfer into their preferred program later.

Be careful.

At some universities, transferring between majors or undergraduate schools is relatively straightforward. At others, moving into highly sought-after programs such as computer science, engineering, nursing, or business can be extremely difficult—or sometimes effectively impossible.

Never enroll at a university assuming you’ll be able to switch into a competitive program later. If studying a particular subject is essential to you, investigate the university’s internal-transfer policies before applying, not after enrolling.

So, How Much Does Your Major Matter?

Think of intended major as one variable in a much larger equation.

At one college, it may have relatively little impact on the admissions decision. At another, your choice could place you into an entirely different applicant pool.

Before submitting your application, answer three questions:

  1. Does this university admit by institution, undergraduate school, or major?

  2. Is my intended program capacity-constrained or particularly competitive?

  3. Does the major I’ve selected genuinely fit the interests demonstrated throughout my application?

Your intended major shouldn’t be chosen because you think it’s what a future doctor, engineer, researcher, or attorney is supposed to study.

And it shouldn’t be selected because an internet forum told you sociology has a higher acceptance rate than biology.

Choose the academic direction that best reflects the questions you genuinely want to spend the next several years exploring.

Because the strongest answer to “What do you want to study?” isn’t necessarily the most impressive or strategic one.

It’s the one that makes sense when an admissions officer reads the rest of your application.


Underclassmen – Your Summer Research Search Starts Now: 50 STEM & Medical Programs to Explore

 

If you are an underclassman interested in medicine, next summer may feel far away. But some of the most exciting opportunities for next summer begin accepting applications during the fall, making September the perfect time to start researching and exploring.

Competitive research programs can give high school students the opportunity to work in university laboratories, investigate real scientific questions, learn from researchers, and discover what a career in medicine might actually look like. Some programs focus specifically on biomedical research, while others offer opportunities in fields ranging from astrophysics and mathematics to artificial intelligence and engineering.

You should not wait until junior year to start looking!

Why Start So Early?
Many students begin searching for summer programs in March or April—only to discover that applications for some of the most competitive opportunities closed months earlier.

Research and STEM programs operate on very different timelines. Some applications open as early as September or October, while many major deadlines fall between December and February.

Starting now gives you time to research programs carefully instead of applying to whatever happens to still be open. It also gives you time to prepare. Selective programs may ask for teacher recommendations, transcripts, essays, descriptions of extracurricular activities, or explanations of your scientific interests.

What Should You Be Doing This Fall?
You don’t need to complete 50 applications. In fact, you shouldn’t! Freshmen through juniors can use the beginning of the school year to:

  • Explore your interests. Do you keep reading about genetics? Love coding? Want to understand the brain? Fascinated by space? Start identifying the questions you genuinely want to investigate.
  • Create a résumé. Include your coursework, activities, volunteering, employment, STEM competitions, independent projects, leadership, and relevant skills.
  • Build relationships with your teachers. Many programs require recommendations from math or science teachers.
  • Keep a deadline spreadsheet. Record eligibility requirements, application opening dates, deadlines, costs, recommendation requirements, and essay prompts.
  • Look beyond program prestige. A meaningful research experience with a professor at a university near home can be every bit as valuable to your development as attending a nationally recognized summer program.

Most importantly, check eligibility before investing time in an application. Some programs accept only rising seniors, while others are open to younger students. Others have geographic, age, citizenship, or school-specific requirements.

Your Interview Story Bank:
8 Experiences to Prepare Now

 

One of the biggest mistakes applicants make when preparing for medical school interviews is trying to predict every question they might be asked.

There are simply too many.

Instead, prepare a story bank: a collection of experiences you know well enough to adapt to different questions. Most interview questions are ultimately asking you to demonstrate a handful of qualities medical schools value—how you lead, work with others, respond to difficulty, make decisions, serve others, and interact with patients.

Before interview season gets busy, identify these eight stories from your experiences.

1. Leadership
Choose a time when you influenced a group, solved a problem, initiated change, or helped others succeed.

Importantly, leadership does not require a title. Some of the strongest examples involve recognizing what needed to happen and taking responsibility for making it happen.

Be ready to explain: What did you specifically do? How did others respond? What was the outcome? What did the experience teach you about leadership?

2. Teamwork
Medicine is intensely collaborative, so expect schools to explore how you function on a team.

Choose an experience in which your contribution mattered but you were not necessarily the person in charge. Strong examples show that you can listen, communicate, compromise, recognize others’ strengths, and put the team’s goal ahead of your own recognition.

The interviewer isn’t just evaluating whether your team succeeded. They’re evaluating what kind of teammate you were.

3. Conflict
“Tell me about a conflict” can be surprisingly difficult if you haven’t prepared for it.

Look for a genuine disagreement—with a coworker, classmate, teammate, supervisor, volunteer, or organization member—where you had to navigate competing perspectives.

Avoid stories where the takeaway is essentially, I was right and the other person eventually realized it.

The strongest conflict stories demonstrate listening, perspective-taking, communication, compromise, and maturity.

4. Failure
Yes, you need an actual failure.

Applicants sometimes choose a disguised success: “I set an incredibly ambitious goal and only achieved 95% of it.” Interviewers can usually recognize this immediately.

Instead, identify something that genuinely didn’t go as planned. Maybe you performed poorly, made a mistake, failed to accomplish a goal, or realized your original approach wasn’t working.

Spend less time defending what happened and more time explaining what you learned and what you changed afterward.

5. Resilience
Failure and resilience are related, but they aren’t identical.

For resilience, think about a period when something remained difficult for an extended time and you had to adapt, persist, seek support, or change your approach.

The strongest stories aren’t simply about enduring something hard. They demonstrate how you responded to difficulty and what you learned about yourself in the process.

6. Ethical Reasoning
You don’t necessarily need a dramatic medical ethics dilemma.

Think about a time when you faced competing responsibilities, values, or interests. Perhaps you had to protect someone’s privacy, address inappropriate behavior, decide whether to speak up, balance fairness with compassion, or navigate a situation without an obvious answer.

Be prepared to explain not only what you did, but how you decided what to do.

That reasoning process is particularly valuable preparation for MMI interviews.

7. Advocacy or Service
Choose an experience that demonstrates how you’ve responded to the needs of someone beyond yourself.

The strongest examples go deeper than describing volunteer hours. What did you notice? What did the people you served actually need? How did you respond? Did the experience challenge an assumption you previously held?

Be careful about positioning yourself as the person who “saved” a community. Strong service stories demonstrate humility, listening, partnership, and an understanding of your own role.

8. Meaningful Patient Interaction
If you’ve had clinical exposure, identify at least one patient encounter that has stayed with you.

You don’t need the most medically dramatic case you’ve witnessed. Often, the best stories involve a small interaction that changed how you understood communication, trust, vulnerability, caregiving, or the physician-patient relationship.

Most importantly, remember appropriate patient confidentiality. Focus on what you observed, what you did, and what you learned rather than unnecessary identifying details.

The Secret: You Don’t Actually Need Eight Completely Different Stories

Here’s where this exercise becomes especially useful.

One experience might demonstrate leadership and conflict. Another could illustrate teamwork, resilience, and failure. A clinical encounter might help you discuss advocacy, ethical reasoning, and patient communication.

That means your goal isn’t to memorize eight perfectly polished answers.

Instead, create a bank of perhaps 5–8 strong experiences and know each one from several angles.

For every story, make sure you can quickly identify:
Situation → Your role → Your actions → Outcome → Reflection

That final piece—reflection—is often what separates an adequate interview answer from a memorable one.

Medical schools already have your activity list. They don’t need you to recite it back to them.

The interview gives them something your written application can’t: the opportunity to understand how you think about the experiences you’ve had and how those experiences have shaped the person—and future physician—you are becoming.

University Updates and Numbers You Need to Know

 

📊 Beginning in Fall 2027, first-year students in the University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) will have their first-semester grades reported as Pass/No Credit rather than traditional letter grades on their transcripts, and those grades will not factor into their GPA. Students will still receive letter grades and faculty feedback internally, but the pilot is designed to ease the transition to college, encourage academic exploration, and reduce pressure during that critical first semester.

📊 BS/MD Update: Brooklyn College has confirmed that its Coordinated B.A.–M.D. The Program with the CUNY School of Medicine will not accept new applicants for the 2027–28 school year, so current seniors should remove the program from their BS/MD lists. Importantly, Brooklyn College has not announced that the program is permanently discontinued, so for now it should be considered paused for this application cycle rather than eliminated.

📊 The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix announced a new medical-education campus in partnership with the Gila River Indian Community. The campus is expected to open in July 2027 and will become the first U.S. medical school campus to grant M.D. degrees within a tribal nation. It is planned for only about 10 students per year, with students spending the first portion of training in Phoenix.
