September Medical News

By Brandie Erickson September 28, 2022 Newsletter

September often accompanies a bit of anxiety as earliest college deadlines loom in the next month. At this point of the admissions cycle, it is important to keep college deadlines in mind – the majority of our seniors have ten or more schools due November 1, which also translates to roughly 30 essays to complete. It is more important than ever before to not lose momentum!

If you are feeling lost on starting the supplemental essays required by almost every direct medical program, download our guide to the Most Common Supplemental Essays. Keep in mind that we still have essay coaches available to help you finish those essays to perfection. Schedule a free consultation today to hear all the details of our services and our flexible pricing package!

Medical School BS/MD News

  • The colleges paired with SUNY Upstate Medical University are some of the most popular programs for our students each year. They have an upcoming information session on October 20 for you to gather more information about these BS/MD pathways before application deadlines. Here is the type of information you will learn in this information session:

    • For the interview, they are looking for students who demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and can show that their desire to enter the field of medicine is based on their own personal reasons.

  • Did you know that Youngstown State University has two direct medical pathways? YSU-BaccMed Consortium provides a specialized premedical undergraduate curriculum in addition to early assurance to either Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) or Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM). Read our interview with YSU on Forbes

  • Have your efforts in research recognized by submitting an abstract to be presented at Educating Leaders, the premier osteopathic medical education event held April 26 – 28, in Baltimore. Deadline for submissions is October 10.

  • You are invited to attend the AOGME Residents and Fellows Council (RFC) Webinar – Residency Interviewing & Tips for The Match on September 19

Direct Medical Program deadlines

While it is common knowledge in the direct medical world that the major deadline to keep in mind is November 1st, it is important to know this is not the earliest deadline. Both the Penn State-Jefferson Accelerated Premedical-Medical program and the University of Pittsburgh’s Guaranteed Admissions program have set their college application deadlines for October 15. Some of these programs with early deadlines also have the highest number of essays across the board.

In fact, applying to BS/MD programs can feel like trying to solve a giant puzzle, with different application requirements, deadlines and interview details for each program. Download Moon Prep’s BS/MD FAQ guide to make sure you know the difference between BS/MD application process details from traditional undergraduate programs.

BS/MD Reminder!

This is just a reminder that if the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell 4 + 4 program or Texas Tech University’s Undergraduate to Medical School Initiative program are on your college list, make sure to sign up for the Casper/Altus exam. The first early application deadline for Hofstra is November 15, and you will have some time after this deadline to take the Casper test, but we recommend taking the test in advance and not waiting. This is a situational test designed to test your aptitude as a doctor, to ensure that medicine is a good personal fit for your skill set, through written and video questions. Schedule a free consultation today to see how a Moon Prep counselor can help you prepare for this test through tutoring!

Virtual Medical School

If you want to explore information about medical school for your future, there is no better place than attending the 2022 Virtual Medical School Fair hosted by The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).This is your chance before application deadlines to connect early with medical school admissions counselors to learn what they are looking for in applicants, hear personalized details of each campus in attendance, and meet current med students from many schools on your list. DO or MD?

At Moon Prep, we’ve been explaining the similarities and differences between allopathic medicine and osteopathic medicine to our families for years. We have been navigating the world of DO vs. MD through our articles on Forbes and daily discussions with our students as we help them discover the right path. We also created a handy Comparison of MD and DO Guide for you to download and review.

Recently, the American Medical Association released an article breaking down the difference between the two medical branches from a physician and an organization viewpoint. With medical school application numbers continuing to break records for the past 3 years, it is smart to explore every avenue to medicine available to you. Check out their opinion here

Winning Research

If you are an upperclassmen medical student interested in entering the field of research, it is essential to stay current on the research projects that are turning heads. The American Medical Association released an article on the “winning formula,” an examination of the past winners of their AMA Research Challenge. And although the deadline to submit abstracts for this December’s Challenge, reading the article about past projects can help shape your ideas to submit to the next Challenge in April 2023.

For underclassmen high school students (or their parents) wondering about the best timeline for adding research into a resume as they approach college admissions, download our Early High School Checklist timeline guide.

Khan Academy for MCAT

High school students are typically familiar with the Khan Academy resources available, but did you know their resources are not only for high school students? The Khan Academy MCAT course covers a foundational knowledge and refresher course over all the basic science knowledge, as well as develop strong studying skills to prepare for the exam. We never want to pass up a free resource! Reach an article covering this free resource on the AAMC blog.

Rising Researchers

For underclassmen, it’s time to be strategic about how you spend time outside the classroom during the school year. Thankfully, we have you covered. Registration is now open for the Winter session of Rising Researchers, an 8-week (January 9 – March 23) online research class under a researcher from UMass Amherst. The course is designed to provide you with an introduction to statistical and machine learning techniques for understanding, finding, and explaining health equity gaps in electronic health records data.

The best part? Students receive 2 college credit hours and there are no course prerequisites, 9-11 grades are encouraged to apply. Apply by Nov 1 to get $200 off the total cost!
