As July draws to a close, secondary essays for medical school applicants are rolling in. While the primary application portal for AMCAS opens in early June and doesn’t close until midnight CST on November 1st, med student hopefuls with the best chance of acceptance have already submitted their primary applications and pre-written their secondary essays. For medical school hopefuls, now is the time to start Preparing for the 2025 Admissions Cycle. A $1 billion investment will change students’ lives at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine as medical tuition will be waived for families making up to $300,00 annually while school fees and living expenses will be covered for families making up to $175,000. Over 60% of current or matriculating medical students will immediately qualify for this financial aid. The Bloomberg Philanthropies endowment will also expand aid for other graduate degrees and support the newly announced School of Government and Policy.  

Students applying to medical school in Iowa may qualify for one of 27 full-ride scholarships. Couple Karen Simmons and Mark Gilbert committed $3 million to support medical students’ tuition during the next 10 years to ease the financial burden of becoming a doctor. Touched by the impact of the doctor’s who cared for Karen’s late husband, she hopes to attract high-quality medical school candidates who plan to serve within the state of Iowa.

Bruce E. Livingston, alumnus of Central Michigan University, was comforted by the care he received from medical students and residents while admitted to a regional hospital. Livingston sadly passed away in 2021, however, his legacy lives on as his estate established The Bruce E. Livingston Endowed Medical Scholarship with a gift of over $5.1 million to the Central Michigan University College of Medicine. Michigan residents will be favored in receiving the scholarship to cover the cost of attendance and student research.

The White Coat Investor Scholarship aims to pay it forward by “helping those who wear the white coat get a fair shake.” The goal of the for-profit business is to increase financial literacy among physicians and reduce the indebtedness of professional students. The scholarship application is open to professional students enrolled full-time in the United States, and the application closes on August 31, 2024. Five winners will be chosen based on an 800-1200 word essay from each of the “Inspiring Stories” and “Financial” categories.
