December Medical News

By Brandie Erickson December 21, 2022 BS/MD Admissions Consulting Newsletter

It is officially interview season at Moon Prep! Our seniors have received invitations to interview at New Jersey Institute of Technology, The College of New Jersey, Drew University, Rutgers University-Newark, St. Bonaventure University, Penn State and many more. Moon Prep seniors are busy completing prep sessions and mock interviews with their counselors. We have spent the last several months crafting strong applications, personal statements, and supplemental essays and now it’s time for students to showcase their interview skills.

If you (or a student in your house!) have an upcoming BS/MD or BS/DO interview, we would love to help with this essential final step. Our experienced team has limited capacity to take interview prep students; do not delay. Moon Prep medical mentors are skilled to assist students through the interview process since they have interviewed at these medical schools themselves and many have also sat on the other side of the table conducting medical interviews.

Space is limited, so schedule a call today to get started over the winter break.

Rising Researchers

Last call! For underclassmen, it’s time to be strategic about how you spend time outside the classroom during the school year. Thankfully, we have you covered. Registration is now open for the Winter session of Rising Researchers, an 8-week (January 9 – March 23) online research class under a researcher from UMass Amherst. The course is designed to provide you with an introduction to statistical and machine learning techniques for understanding, finding, and explaining health equity gaps in electronic health records data.

The best part? Students receive 2 college credit hours and there are no course prerequisites, 9-11 grades are encouraged to apply!

Traditional Interview or MMI?

BS/MD and BS/DO interviews require entirely new skills that students must master. Traditional college interview prep doesn’t come close to preparing you for the questions you’ll be asked in a direct medical interview. Not to mention, some of these interviews are held in a completely different format, for those unique MMI interviews. Whether it is a traditional direct medical interview or a station-based MMI interview, make sure you are prepared!

Students need a strong foundation in medical knowledge to ace these interviews; it is much more in depth than simply answering – “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” A good place to start is our BS/MD Interview Guide and our book: Moon Prep’s Guide to MMI. Answering these questions is a new art form, and our team is available to help you prepare. Starting early is key since most students will need multiple sessions before they feel confident entering the interview.

You deserve to give yourself the best chance for success in this final application step! Schedule a free call today to sign up this season before we reach capacity.

Summer Program Season

For our underclassmen, it is officially summer program application season. Our younger students are scheduling meetings to discuss which summer programs fill the gaps in their resumes and also planning passion projects. In fact, the MIT summer program deadline has already passed!

There are many prestigious programs with deadlines in January, with essays and application materials to assemble in advance. Don’t wait until after the holidays to sign up for summer planning guidance with your own Moon Prep counselor – each counselor has a limited number of spots in each grade and those spots fill up fast as soon as January arrives! Schedule a free call today to get started on summer planning immediately.

Podcast > Residency Fairs

There’s a new way to find the perfect medical school: podcasts! The American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine is hosting virtual residency fairs through recorded podcasts for prospective candidates to listen to on-demand. Listeners can hear details of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency programs on their schedule, rather than waiting for a recruiting fair. Learn more on the AACOM website.

Complete List of DO Schools

The American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine recently published an internal report including a comprehensive list of every osteopathic college of medicine in the U.S. While there are many direct medical programs tied to DO schools, this is a great resource for medical school hopefuls as they plan their college lists. View the full list here. Curious about the difference between MD and DO schools? We’ve got you covered with a comparison guide to help you decide. Download our guide here.

Fewer Loans for Medical School

It’s no secret that medical school carries a heavy price tag. First, you attend a prestigious undergraduate college to help secure a seat in medical school, and then you’re saddled with another 4-year bill with fewer scholarships available. If that price tag is on your mind as you approach medical school this season, you might appreciate viewing Bankrate’s list of America’s Best Value Medical Schools for 2022. Topping the list? Texas schools reign as the best value. Also check out our Forbes article listing tuition free medical schools.

International Medical Schools?

Medical school admission rates in the U.S. are lower than ever. In fact, just 38% of applicants received an acceptance letter last year. Thankfully, this is not the only pathway to a career in medicine. You can attend an international medical school, while still being able to practice medicine in the States. Plus, there are dozens of international medical schools to choose from. Read our tips on choosing an international medical school in our recent Forbes article.
