The Future of Medical Schools
During the pandemic, our BS/MD students were disappointed to learn of the closure of two of the top guaranteed medical programs, both Washington University and Northwestern University. Thankfully, while the seats for BS/MD programs have become more competitive, the high demand for physicians is still being recognized across higher education institutions. This year alone we will see the opening of multiple medical schools:
-
Texas Christian University announced a new medical campus for its School of Medicine to be located in Fort Worth.
-
Duquesne University began construction on their new College of Osteopathic Medicine for expected enrollment in the Fall of 2024.
-
In October, Touro University began construction on its new osteopathic medicine college in Great Falls for enrollment projected for Fall of 2023,
-
Another option will be coming to Montana as well, with the announcement of another medical campus planned in Billings with Rocky Vista University.
With more medical schools opening each year, the future of medical school admissions is on the rise. Read our post on Forbes to learn more about our thoughts on the ways COVID has affected medical admissions.

A Future In Medicine
If you are considering a career in medicine, you might enjoy an early look at medical schools. The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) is once again holding their 2022 Virtual Medical School Fair, which will be on Tuesday, April 19. In addition to learning about admission information for the over 70 medical schools in attendance, the fair will also host information sessions on financial aid, preparing for the MCAT, and the AMCAS® application. This is a great opportunity to familiarize yourself with the traditional medical school application process, while being able to show early interest in participating medical schools. Accelerated Medical School: Know Your Options
For students who are certain that their future career lies in medicine, a direct medical program from high school is not the only option. Programs like the three-year MD pathway at NYU Grossman School of Medicine in Manhattan exist as accelerated medical education options for students seeking to enter the profession earlier than the traditional timeline of medical school. Read all the details about these three-year medical programs on the AAMC website.
An Equitable Future
This past week, at the ViVE conference, the American Medical Association announced a new initiative focused on guiding equitable innovation, the In Full Health innovation. This movement is born from a desire to support investments in historically underrepresented populations. This initiative will be based on a platform that helps guide their healthcare organization partners to seek equitable investments and development options in the future, based on seeing an opportunity to impact underserved areas of need. Read more about their mission and principles behind this new initiative on the AMA website.
The BS/MD College List
One college application task is perfect for March: building a college list. To ensure that rising seniors are able to maximize their time during the summer completing the essays ahead of time for college applications due in the fall, now is the time to finish your research and build your college list. This step can take some substantial time, so it is best to start as early as possible! BS/MD programs, in particular, include more essays than most, so the more organized we are, with ample time to prepare all of our tasks, the better.
Are you seeking insider advice on which BS/MD programs to add to your college list? Our Moon Prep counselors are ready to help build the perfect balanced college list.

Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
-
Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?
-
Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
-
Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
-
Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you’ve already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.
